Is Your Fire Burning?

It is a cold winter day here in Auckland; I had to light a fire…

Here I am sitting in front of the fire with my lap top thinking to myself, lighting the fire is like building your business.

Here is what I mean:

We collect firewood during the summer, some from our own garden and to top it up we needed to buy some more logs. It is like getting the training and tools you need to build your business.

You will need to read books, learn marketing, improve your communications skills, get some tools like video recording devices, some software, email marketing service… etc…

Then you may need some personal coaching and/or invest on some courses to learn new skills.

Now you got your firewood, but if you do not take action to physically light the fire you will not get anything out of the firewood. It will just sit there and waste away. Unfortunately it will not happen like magic. You will need to lay the firewood correctly & get your box of matches to light it. You may need few old newspapers or some kind of fire starters to get it started.

Ok, In business all your training, tools and skills you gained is in vein if you do not take action. If you want to build your business whether you like it or not you will need to take ACTION. Mind you, you have already invested your time, energy and money getting all that training and skills.

Just like the wood, if you do not take action, nothing is going to happen… Just like you need some fire starters you may need a bit of help getting started. Here is your DESIRE is going to start playing. Why do you want to build this business? Why do you want this so badly? Your motivation is going to be “how badly you need to change your situation?”

With a bit of a struggle you start the fire. Well… it is not a walk in the park, especially when you are lighting it for the first time in the season. It is going to be a struggle. Sometimes you feel like chucking the whole thing away and switch on the heater.  But, part of you tells you to keep going… and you do. Whalaaa… you get the fire going eventually. Now you can sit in front, sip your hot soup and may be let the kids roast a few marshmallows too… Only thing you got to do now is to keep an eye on it and add logs periodically. You are happy and enjoying the warmth knowing that tomorrow lighting the fire is going to be so much easier than today.

What about the business? You got all your ducks in a row and got to work. How often you hit brick walls, dead ends, challenges, frustrations… You feel like giving this whole thing up. What keeps you going is your desire to succeed, no matter what. You persevere and eventually start seeing results. All you need to do is to keep a good eye on the business and attend to the things that need attention.  Just like you are keeping the fire going with adding new logs you will need to add new marketing, lead generation techniques, products etc.. to the mix in order to keep building your business.

Finally the great lessons here are

  • Get the tools, training and coaching you need to build your business
  • Use the tools, skills you gained to take action
  • Know your ‘WHY’
  • When you face with challenges, persevere. Go deep within you and ask “Why do I do What I do?”
  • Once the momentum starts to build keep feeding it with new marketing and skills
  • Enjoy your journey

What a wonderful story Damayanthi! This reminds me of a story once told me by another coach – she used to liken Network marketing to a rocket going up in space. At first, the rocket needs a huge amount of fuel to get going, then as it goes up further and further into space, it needs less fuel. Same with our business, and same as the fuel for the fire!
