Chapter 2 : The big secret of dealing with people
Do you know how to get anybody to do anything?
There is only one way, it is give them what they want.
Some of the things most people want are health, food, shelter, sleep, sexual gratification, well-being of our children & feeling of importance.
Usually people satisfy these needs except “feeling of importance”.
“Everybody likes a complement” – Lincoln
“The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated” – William James
This desire for a feeling of importance not only let us witness great human beings like Lincoln, Dickens, Einstein but also people like Dillinger who got to the wrong side of law.
Carnigie writes in his book, “ We nourish the bodies of our children and friends and employees, but how seldom do we nourish their self-esteem? We provide them with roast beef and potatoes to build their energy, but we neglect to give them kind words of appreciation that would sing in their memories for years like the music of morning stars”
What you need to realize is that Mr. Carnigie is not talking about flattery, but genuine appreciation.
The difference between flattery and appreciation is that flattery is insincere, while appreciation to sincere.
This is the best paragraph in this chapter for me…
“When we are not engaged in thinking about some definite problem, we usually spend about 95% of our time thinking about ourselves. Now if we stop thinking about ourselves for a while and begin to think of the other persons good points, we won’t have to resort to flattery so cheap and false that it can be spotted almost before it is out of the mouth”
Who did you appreciate today? I appreciate you taking the time to read this. Take a moment to think about other people in your life and business, I am sure you can find many things that you appreciate about them. Take time to tell them that you appreciate them and be grateful for their presence in your life.
Business Lesson : Genuinely appreciate your subscribers, clients, team, contractors, fans and make them feel important and worthy. They will LOVE you for it.
I know this is getting better and better, next chapter is mostly relate to business. I cannot wait to report on that to you. Keep and eye out for that.
